What is General Insurance?

General Insurance is the concept of insuring anything and everything other than a person’s life. This can be an automobile, a house or other commercial risks. Since the general insurance aims at offering protection against unforeseen events such as theft, accident, illness etc., you may not expect returns against your investment, but it certainly offers financial aid when you need it the most to help recover your losses. People prepare for their death by insuring their lives, insuring what you possess while still alive too is important. General Insurance allows you to do just that. Protecting what you have well ahead of unfortunate events.

General insurance gives you the freedom to insure anything that holds some value to be insured including a person’s legal responsibilities. Since the scope of general insurance is so vast, we’ll try and look into some of the major types of general insurance such as Automobile insurance, Property Insurance, Liability Insurance, Accident, Sickness and Unemployment Insurance, Travel Insurance and Health Insurance.

Automobile Insurance or what is commonly known as Vehicle Insurance is defined as the insurance that you obtain for your motor vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses etc. to protect against the damages resulting from accidents and its resulting liabilities. In most countries, automobile insurance has now been made compulsory owing to increasing traffic on the roads making it illegal to drive the vehicle without an automobile insurance policy. The coverage normally includes damage to the vehicle, legal liabilities and medical expenses if any.

Property Insurance or what we normally call Home insurance covers private homes and losses occurring to one’s home and its contents. Home insurance is usually a multiple insurance that only covers damages to house and property but also legal liabilities under a single policy in case of an unfortunate event. Home insurance also covers the homeowner and tenant related issues too.

Liability Insurance is a general insurance that provides protection against third party claims such that the reimbursement is made not to the insuree but to the sufferer.  The only condition being that the damages should not be intentional just as in case of a manufacturer making goods for public use may unintentionally release a product in the market whose defects appear upon usage. In such a case, the customer can sue the manufacturer for damages and manufacturer in turn may claim his liability insurance to pay the consumer as a third party for the same.

In certain cases the damages to an individual’s health and loss of employment may also be reimbursed with help from employers or social organizations. This is generally referred to as Accident, Sickness or UnemploymentDisability Insurance insurance where the insuree can claim reimbursement against a physical or a mental disability, loss of job or for medical assistance in the form of aids and equipment for the disabled. This is also known as .

Travel insurance is required by a traveler traveling within his own country or abroad to cover medical expenses and/or financial losses while traveling. Travel insurance can either be purchased while booking a trip or from travel insurance companies, latter covering most damages or threats. Travel insurance is most needed by students, businessmen, and tourists. Most commonly travel insurance is known to cover the medical expenses, emergency evacuation or assistance, trip cancellation, accidental death or injuries, funeral expenses, loss, theft or damage to personal property which include travel documents, legal assistance and much more.

While there is a growing number as far as types of insurances is concerned, all we say is that anything and everything that holds some value to you can very well be insured to help you recover from your losses in an unfortunate event.
