Biotechnology is a science that utilizes living organisms to produce healing drugs, diagnostics products and many other products that gratefully benefit society. Analysts have predicted that biotechnology will become one of the most important applied sciences in the 21st century. Biotechnology has led to the development of numerous antibiotics for the treatment of different infections and also the development of number vaccines for the prevention of many diseases. Biotechnology is successfully applied to produce organic products as well as biological weapons.

By choosing to pursue a profession in Biotechnology, you will be entering into the subdivision of science that deals with methods and techniques that manipulate living organisms to contribute to the betterment of human life and its environment. Biotechnology has a wide range in its application, it has relevant role in the advancement of every science, particularly in agriculture, food science, medicine and environment.

Career Options Available:

Think about the medical and technological advances that have occurred over the past few years. The human genome was mapped. We can clone; people are performing stem cell research and it potential to help disease. It is growing and with that comes the need for more people to fill Biotechnology jobs positions. Individuals who have keen interest in Biotechnology and want to make their bright future in this field can find an array of career choices, as the field is rapidly growing. Biotechnology students can do specialization in any of the six major fields of Biotechnology.

  • Biological Scientists: Biological scientists study living organisms and their relationship to their environment. Most specialize in some area of biology such as zoology and microbiology. Many biological scientists work in research and development. Some conduct basic research to advanced knowledge of living organisms, including virus, bacteria and other infected agents.
  • Biomedical Engineers: Biomedical engineer researches and develops new medical equipments, using his or her knowledge of biology, medicine, technology and mechanical engineering. Biomedical engineers work for medical research and development institutions, studying the existing medical technology and thinking of ways to improve upon it. Experienced biomedical engineers are generally in high demand in order to apply the newest technology and principles to the creation of safe, effective medical devices.
  • Clinical Laboratory Technologists: Students can also do specialization for checking the symptoms of any disease as well as to detect body fluids and tissues. In this field, one can work as a pathologist, chemist, biological or a material scientist.
  • Forensic Scientists: A forensic scientist or crime laboratory analyst provides significant scientific information that can be crucial for the criminal proceedings. They examine, test, and analyze tissue samples, chemical substances, physical materials and ballistics evidence, using recording, measuring and testing equipment. Jobs for forensic science technicians are expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations.

  • Medical Scientists: Medical scientists perform medical laboratory test on blood, other body fluids and tissues, which assist clinicians in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Medical scientists work in hospitals laboratories, private pathology laboratories.
  • Pharmacists: the work of pharmacists is to distribute medicines as well as guiding patients for correct medication and appropriate dosage. Career opportunities are unlimited and advanced practice nurses, psychiatrists and pharmacy technicians.

There is an immense possibility of getting jobs in the field as the demand for biotechnologists is growing in India as well as abroad. It is estimated that more than 10000 biotechnologists of top skills are required in coming years.
